Making a Hair Brush.

Posted by Bobbi-lee - April 28th, 2007

Making a hair brush will be very similar to the tutorial on drawing hair, except we will be drawing in a straight line with each stroke. Start off with a dark base and draw strands with the brush tool. Do not use the pen tool with fills, this whole brush must be made with fill-off, for it to work.

Place lighter strands, with a less stroke width on top.

And again, lighter strands and even less stroke width.

And again.

Now select the whole hair strand, and drag it to the brush panel.

Select Artbrush, and apply the follwing settings. You can choose either hue shift or tints and shades for the colourisation options, they will both have different colouring results, but you can try that for yourself.

Once the brush is made, you can select it and start “brushing” hair down.

Here is some hair.

Heres some more different styles of hair, the possibility’s are endless

You can even have a go at green hair.

Drawing Hair

Posted by Bobbi-lee - April 28th, 2007

This is a very basic way to do hair in Illustrator. There are far more ways to do hair, and this is only one technique that I use. First we use a dark base colour, and draw some strands. Using the artbrush we created in the making brushes tutorial is good because of the pointed ends and likeness to hair.

Next we make a new layer and draw some more strands, in a lighter colour and a lesser stroke value. The value I have used here is 0.75.

And now yet again we make another layer, in an even lighter colour and draw the hair strands, change the stroke value to 0.5

This is the last layer, the stroke value is 0.25 and the last colour is the lightest. This is the finished product. It can be of course more neater and you can look at photos of hairstyles to work out which direction to go in.

Now you can go on to the next tutorial on making a hair-brush (no pun intended)

Ocean Illustration

Posted by Bobbi-lee - April 28th, 2007

For this tutorial we will be learning how to draw an ocean scene using Illustrators symbols and gradients.

First make a rectangle with a light to dark blue gradient

Now go to the symbols panel, click on the little arrow and click on more symbol sets. Click on nature. We will be using nature for this tutorial. Choose the plant symbols (by clicking and dragging them to the canvas) and randomly place them at the bottom of the image.

Choose some rocks and sand, place a rectangle of yellow behind the plants and rocks to look like sand.

Choose some fish and randomly place them.

Choose the bubble symbol that you made in the making symbols tutorial

Randomly “spray” the symbols onto the image.

Choose the symbol sizer tool and resize the bubbles to various sizes.

Make a new layer and place a rectangle over the top of the whole image that you want to keep.

Making sure it is on another layer like below. Select the whole image (Control + A)

Go To Object>>Clipping Mask>>Make

Your picture will be clipped and finished.
