Layout Trouble

Posted by Bobbi-lee - June 15th, 2007

I can’t help being a perfectionist when it comes to my layout. Even though my site is all validated and looks good in most browsers, I really need help on the following things

  1. The space/padding between the sidebar and the content is a huge gap on higher resolutions. How do I make the two closer together and not so stretched?
  2. I want the title and comment link to be in the same sort of style div like the date format above. Like this example. I managed to get it very close, but then when you click on the comment link only the comments show without the blog. Then when I changed it around a bit, it showed the blog but no comments or comment form. I am really confused how to do this.
  3. Anything else to make my site look “normal” on all browsers.

Thanks if anyone can help, or give me any tips.

  1. I’m really sorry, but I don’t have any suggestions or helpful hints for your layout.

All your layouts are fabulous, I love this one a lot! It’s so beautiful, and the tulips seem like they would smell sweet.

Sorry, good luck with the coding Bobbi-Lee!

  2. Well I’m using 1280×800 and there is a large space between the sidebar and content area.

I suggest that you give a max-width to your #main of 1000px, but make it fluid (approx. 80% width of the screen) so that it fits into smaller resolutions as well.

Then, if you assign percentage widths to the sidebar and content area, and just float them either left or right, you’ll avoid the gap between the two.

Regarding the comment link thingie, you’ll have to change the “single.php” or “comments.php” file in your Wordpress theme…I’m not sure how you’ve currently got it set up, but it’ll be one or the other.

Additionally, I’d probably go with a white on the navigation links rather than blue, as it’s a bit too hard to read against the green…even a lighter shade of blue would be an improvement.

If you need more clarification on what I’ve just suggested, feel free to email me. :)
Generally speaking, I do like your layout!

  3. Thankyou so much for your advice Amanda, I really appreciate it. I am going to work on the suggestions for getting rid of that big gap. I have the layout fluid and the sidebar float at left but I still couldn’t work it out. I am very new to wordpress so it is hard to get everything to function the way I want it. Thanks again.

  4. I suppose to fix the padding problem you can add percentage padding to the outer edges of your divs, and fixed padding on the inner edges; that way the layout will look put together well.
