Dear Noise Maker

Dear Neighbour,

You don’t know me, but I live below you on the second floor. It has come to my attention that I must write you this letter with a few questions.
Why must you have the constant need to get up in the middle of the night and what I presume is move furniture around? Why must you stomp around on the ground like you have elephant feet, letting it echo down through to my room at night? Why is your bathroom above my bedroom, so when you go to the toilet at night I hear you? Why do you wake up every morning at 4am and walk back and forth around your apartment for no apparent reason? And finally, why the hell were you sawing and drilling stuff at 3 fucking am?
Maybe you are a night shift worker, but why be so loud? Maybe you have some form of OCD where you need to move furniture around on a nightly basis. Maybe you are a sleep walker and do not know what you are doing? Maybe you have incontinence and you need to go to the toilet every 2 hours.
I have never seen you but from the sound of your footsteps I can tell you must be a big person, or perhaps you just stomp around on purpose to piss me off. Whatever the reason, please just shut the hell up and let me have a good nights sleep for once in my life.
Sincerely your neighbour

Yes my insomnia has worsened due to a noisy neighbour who just won’t shut up. What can I do?

  1. Sorry to hear about your noisy neighbor that doesn’t seem to help out your insomnia. I hate those kind of people… but then again, it’s also your building? Thin walls = “I hear everything”.

Hope it gets better for you ^-^

  3. The person above me wakes up everyday around 5 AM. It’s AMAZING how much you can find out about someone you have NEVER met, or seen just by their noise.

  4. This sounds like my neighbor, except my family and I live in a neighborhood rather then an apartment complex. I guess noisy neighbors are worse in an apartment complex. My situation is that I have a teenage neighbor who lives with his parents that don’t really care what he does at 3 AM in the morning. So, at 3 AM, he just has an urge to ride his motorcycle around the neighborhood, so that probably woke up the whole neighborhood. Then, he decided to mow the lawn…I hope there’s some sort of noise pollution law against this.

  5. If you have the same landlord, can’t you write a letter of complaint to them or something? If it’s really bad, you might even get away with calling the police with the excuse “it’s so noisy up there that I thought there was a robbery taking place”…they’d get the message. :P

  6. Teelia- The walls aren’t that thin, I never hear the next door neighbours even though I know they play really loud music (I hear it when on the balcony) and I never hear the ones across the hall, even though they have more parties in a week then there are days.

    Paddy- Maybe I will.

Crystal-Yeah I don’t even know the guy (or girl) but they sure as hell piss me off, its like I know his/her routine every night.

Alex- Mowing the lawn and riding his bike around at 3am? Ha! Hey at least he tried to help out by mowing the lawn, not many teenage boys do anything without being asked.

Amanda- Yeah we have the same caretaker who lives on site, I have complained to him many times. I don’t think I’d take it as far as calling the police, because my other half never seems to wake up from it, but I am a light sleeper so it is hard.

  7. I completely understand your situation. I also live in an apartment complex and I swear the neighbors above us lives with a herd of elephants or something. I can’t understand why they need to be so loud.

We had two neighbors that had lived above us. The first ones were the loudest and it seemed they would stomp around for HOURS on end around 11pm at night. Unfortunately, I have work early in the morning and it is very hard to sleep with them stomping. It turned out that they had seven kids. They may have been running a Day Care center. Anyway, they got kicked out.

The second set of neighbors aren’t as bad. However, they seem to love to do the laundry because I hear their washing machine bumping around all the time.

    Ah, lovely neighbors.dict
