Whilst On The Phone Tonight

“Did you move house again?”

“…No, why? ”

“Just last time I read on your blog you said you were moving”

“Mum, I told you not to go on my blog anymore!”

“I wasn’t”

“But you just said you did…”

“Well everyone in Hedland is reading it, like (proceeds to list a lot of names of people I do and do not know)”

crickets chirp

“Besides what about the rest of the world”

“What?”

“The rest of the world is reading your blog, do you like strangers from all over the world reading your ‘personal’ blog? You put it on the internet, it’s out there for everyone else to read”

“But it doesn’t mean you can!”

I suppose she has a point, I just don’t like people who actually know me to read this, especially my own mother, but thats what my portfolio blog is for. I am almost tempted to put this whole website on private, or at least post protected.

  1. Eh, I feel exactly the same as you. Very few RL people know of my blog, and I’d prefer to keep it that way. I think there should be a distinct line drawn between RL and online…and people should stick to it!

  2. I guess lots of bloggers feel the same way. There are just certain things I would like to tell only to close friends in real life but also things I wouldn’t like real life friends reading about. The latter type goes into my blog.

Unfortunately, I’ve given some friends my blog link. *faints* Which means when I do happen to have problems with them I can’t rant freely :P

  3. yeah but I would rather my friends read this than my own mother and everyone she works with. Not that anything is bitching about her or stuff I don’t tell her, I just don;t like the idea you know

  4. This sounds awfully familiar… well not the moving part, but the mother reading the blog.

My mom used to do it, and I always got quite stressed out when she did. I suppose it’s not so much that I write about things I wouldn’t tell her, but rather she always gets so stressed out when reading things about me online.
“You sure there won’t be an axe murderer out to get you? You posted a picture of you”.

Personally, I don’t believe that a country (with some 25 million people + foreigners), a picture and a first name is enough to track me down.

So with me, I’m fine with anyone aside my mom (and my boss maybe - had to give the URL at the interview) reading my blog. I’m just self conscious like that.

  5. My brother reads my blog, so now I can’t blog about him being annoying. Sometimes, it seems like it would have been better not to tell anyone in my family about my blog. It would be kind of creepy if my whole city was reading my blog though…

  6. The only offline person that knows my blog is my boyfriend. I had a domain once and I used to talk about everything that went on offline, a lot of people started finding out about it so I just moved to a new domain.

I can see why you don’t want offline people reading it.

  7. I don’t like people I know in real life knowing about my website, it makes me feel really self-conscious
about it. My family and a few of my friends know, but they don’t really go on.

  8. Only my boyfriend reads my blog when it comes to “real-life” friends. lol. I don’t like offline people reading my blog… I don’t know, it just doesn’t feel right. Plus, I blog about taboo topics so it’s not like I can just let any one of my conservative friends read about it. lol.

Your mom is really funny! You were once contemplating on whether you should continue blogging personal aspects of your life ‘coz your mom stumbled upon your site. But I guess your mom is pretty open-minded so it’s okay. If it were my mom, I’d probably hang myself right then and there, just to beat her out of slowly strangling me to death. lol

  9. Skye- My mum isn’t really that open-minded, theres no way I would talk about things like sex or drugs or a lot of things I wouldn’t want her to know, yet these are things I used to blog about. The worst thing is that she now rings me every time she reads it and tells me, which is downright embarrassing on the phone. I think it would be worse if my dad found my blog or even if my fiance read my blog, he knows about it, but he doesn’t read it.

  10. Password protection is probably the way to go in your case! Why do mother’s think it’s important what total strangers think of us?

I’m a very open person and hardly ever feel self-concious, so I give anyone who will look at me twice my URL. Things I share on my blog are usually things I share in real life.
