My New Addiction

Posted by Bobbi-lee - November 6th, 2007

It all started a few months ago. Some of you may know, I am a big fan of the show Medium. Unfortunately I never had time to watch it when it was on so I recorded each episode with my HDD recorder to watch at another appropriate time. My recorder can record up to 160GB, which is about 80 hours of TV on it, all ready to be watched.

Up until 3 weeks ago I still had the three-part series finale episodes to watch, but because they were all part of a set I wanted to watch them all together or at least in the space of 2-3 days. Unfortunately, as usual, I didn’t have the time to watch them and soon it became forgotten, except the occasional time I would go through my recorder to choose a previously recorded movie to watch.

So around 3 weeks ago on a Saturday I had some time to sit down and watch the final episodes of Medium. I made myself some popcorn and a cool drink; I sat down with remote in hand ready to indulge in just over 3 hours worth of ghost-sighting TV.

Only it wasn’t Medium. It was House.

Somehow, which I really have no idea how; I had set the recorder 1 hour earlier than it was supposed to. It was and still is confusing to me as I have always used the same pre-set (record once a week-same day, same time) and all my other episodes of Medium I had watched were fine. So I tried the other two episodes and realised they were all House. It couldn’t have been a TV mistake, unless House had been moved into Mediums spot (which I really don’t think it was, because I distinctly remember the advertisement telling me of the three-part series finale of Medium at 9.30pm). I have suspicions it was my recorder telling me, ok, ok enough of Medium, lets watch something different.

So there I was, remote in one hand, popcorn in the other and thinking, crap, what do I do? I had never liked House before, even when Amanda, and other blog owners, had made confessions of a crush on House, I remember I replied “Ew, Medium is better” or something equally lame.

But this was 3 hours worth of episodes! Three precious hours that took up space in my HDD recorder, when I could have used it for that late movie I was recording, but had failed because the hard drive was full. I couldn’t just delete these episodes that have been sitting there for months. Especially when my fiancĂ© had asked me if he could delete them so many times and I had always put up a great fight.

So I watched the first one, just to see what it was like. I had seen bits and pieces of House before, but nothing ever caught my interest. I honestly thought it was boring and didn’t understand the hype. But this episode was good. This was really good. As soon as that episode finished I watched the next one. And then the last, at which point I had made up my mind that I now loved House.

Fast forward 3 weeks and I have not missed an episode since. I even watch it live instead of pre-recorded. My fiancé has gotten into watching it too (he used to claim it was crap too), and now he is always reminding me when it is on, or to not make plans on Wednesday nights.

So alas, I did miss the three important Medium episodes, but who cares now that I have House right? Now all I need to do is buy each season by the box.

QOTW: When have you become addicted to something you swore you hated or would never like?

  1. Simple Plan. First time a friend played them to me I was all “meh, not really my thing”. Then I borrowed the CD and listened to it on my own… It’s been downhill ever since.

  2. Modest Mouse and porn.

Modest Mouse I never really swore I hated, but I never thought I’d like them either, but when I finally took the trouble of listening to them they skyrocketed to 3 on my all-time last.fm artist charts. Go figure.

I’m not addicted to porn, therefore the rest of that story doesn’t…need to…be told.

  3. Yes, another convert! House is most definitely the shizniz. Just a note - you can get cheap Season 1 and 2 on eBay - Season 3 is going for about $40 right now on there, so I’m waiting till it goes down about ten bucks to $30.

Sorry to hear you lost your Medium episodes though.

For me, it’s actually something quite lame - chunky necklaces. I used to only wear delicate filigree type stuff, but bought a few chunky ones on a whim a few years ago…and haven’t looked back since! I always thought they made my boobs look wonky, but really, they don’t.

  4. Rachael- I was the same with Simple Plan. Though I haven’t listened to them in a while, I do have many faves by them.

Leila- Never heard of Modest Mouse. Lol at the porn, I guess we all have our secrets.

Amanda- I had a feeling that you were going to tell me to get House on eBay, because you’re so price savvy and all. I blame my house addiction on reading all your posts dedicated to him hehe
I was the same with hunky necklaces, big beads, and plastic beads. The plastic ones reminded me of the ones I wore as a kid so I thought it was tacky. Now I accessorise almost every outfit with them.

  5. Wow. How late are you?

    lol

House is one of THE BEST shows on tv right now. Although, for me the only likable character is House… which is kind of ironic because he’s really the most hatable character as well.

But, how can you hate his sarcasm and wit?

  6. House is great :P I like him! xD

  7. Two words. Harry Potter.

Seriously, I never thought I’d get into it. There was that hairy little issue of how I wasn’t ALLOWED to read it when I was younger… but seriously, I thought it was just a bunch of little kids waving wands around.

The fourth movie came out, and I started seeing ads and trailers and pictures and I thought DAMN! What’s-his-face is like, all grown up. Maybe it might be interesting?

    An obsession was born.

  8. I really haven’t watched House so I can’t comment on that - but it’s a shame you missed your episodes of Medium. I’ve watched it before and it’s pretty good. I’m not a regular teevee watcher though.

Guilty pleasures? Hm, the X factor. I hate it with a passion but I’ll sit there and watch the first ten minutes and before I know it the episode has finished and I’ve watched the entire thing!! I really don’t like the contestants and I think it’s an insult to the intelligence/expertise of the judges. Each year I avoid it, and each year I end up getting sucked in. I need help.

  9. While I know there is something, I can’t quite think of it right now. House is great though. I need to buy the seasons!

  10. Two words: American Idol. I refuse to get sucked in this season!

  11. For some odd reason, I just don’t like watching Medium. I don’t like the main character, she looks weird and isn’t really that good of an actor. Rather I like to watch Ghost Whisperer. K… I lied… I watch Medium sometimes.

I like watching House, but I can’t stand the surgery scenes. Lol

  12. I have not watched Medium or House. I’m too Asian for Western TV dramas. I go for reality shows. :P
But I hated spending money. Now I’m struggling not to be broke.

  13. It’s something about the way House behave that causes me to laugh every time. I believe that he really is nice somewhere deep inside.

I have never been much of a fan for these new series with ghosts. I like the good old fashioned British murders better. Like Lynley, Midsomer Murders and Morse. One of those and a nice cup of tea does it for me. Maybe I’m becoming to influenced by Britain.

  14. Heroes! I told Jenny (accio.nu) that I’d hate it, really didn’t want to watch it, and all that nonsense. Somehow 4 or more months down the road I have the DVD of the series, am intending on buying the rest, and can talk of nothing but that.
    :P

  15. I love medium aswell! That season finale was awesome, I hope you’re able to see it soon.
Never watched an episode of House though, been meaning to for a while.

I used to HATE pink, but now…I kinda like it not really addicted though lol.
