One of those days.
Carl and I have a home phone line but I can only count on one hand the amount of people who actually know that number, and even less that actually use it. We only have the home phone connected so that we can take advantage of having a broadband connection. This morning I woke up to the sound of the home phone ringing. I looked at the clock, it was 8.59am-one more minute and that would have classified as sleeping in. It’s very rare that I get to bed before 2am these days so any sleeping in I can get, I cherish.
Not wanting to answer the phone I thought to myself, whoever it is will know my mobile number and if it is so important they can ring that. So I closed my eyes and tried to ignore it, hoping the answering machine would pick up. The phone stops ringing but then seconds later it’s ringing again.
I then remember that a roof repair man is supposed to come out sometime this week (he didn’t specify a date, just that “when the rain dies down”) and I listen and hear it is not raining. He must be outside knocking on the door and I can’t hear him and perhaps the real estate gave him our home number. I get up out of bed as fast as I can, which isn’t fast at all because when you have the belly the size of a watermelon and you waddle like a duck it is very hard. I put on my dressing gown and slippers then waddle to the window and look outside. No one is here. The phone is still ringing!
So I walk to my bedroom door, go out and towards the phone table. Just as I get there, the phone stops. I wait a little bit in case this person who is ringing wants to ring again. I wait and wait, and after a few minutes I start to go back to my room.
Ring Ring.
By now I feel like picking up this phone and yelling “WHAT?!”. Whoever is ringing better be telling me I have won a million dollars, or a new car, or at the least a box of chocolates! I finally answer the phone, only to find it was a “wrong number”. I couldn’t even get back to sleep either. Thanks, lady on the phone for persistently ringing and ringing and depriving me of my much needed sleep.
Have you ever been interrupted from something important only to find it was a waste of time or useless?
