My New Addiction

Posted by Bobbi-lee - November 6th, 2007

It all started a few months ago. Some of you may know, I am a big fan of the show Medium. Unfortunately I never had time to watch it when it was on so I recorded each episode with my HDD recorder to watch at another appropriate time. My recorder can record up to 160GB, which is about 80 hours of TV on it, all ready to be watched.

Up until 3 weeks ago I still had the three-part series finale episodes to watch, but because they were all part of a set I wanted to watch them all together or at least in the space of 2-3 days. Unfortunately, as usual, I didn’t have the time to watch them and soon it became forgotten, except the occasional time I would go through my recorder to choose a previously recorded movie to watch.

So around 3 weeks ago on a Saturday I had some time to sit down and watch the final episodes of Medium. I made myself some popcorn and a cool drink; I sat down with remote in hand ready to indulge in just over 3 hours worth of ghost-sighting TV.

Only it wasn’t Medium. It was House.

Somehow, which I really have no idea how; I had set the recorder 1 hour earlier than it was supposed to. It was and still is confusing to me as I have always used the same pre-set (record once a week-same day, same time) and all my other episodes of Medium I had watched were fine. So I tried the other two episodes and realised they were all House. It couldn’t have been a TV mistake, unless House had been moved into Mediums spot (which I really don’t think it was, because I distinctly remember the advertisement telling me of the three-part series finale of Medium at 9.30pm). I have suspicions it was my recorder telling me, ok, ok enough of Medium, lets watch something different.

So there I was, remote in one hand, popcorn in the other and thinking, crap, what do I do? I had never liked House before, even when Amanda, and other blog owners, had made confessions of a crush on House, I remember I replied “Ew, Medium is better” or something equally lame.

But this was 3 hours worth of episodes! Three precious hours that took up space in my HDD recorder, when I could have used it for that late movie I was recording, but had failed because the hard drive was full. I couldn’t just delete these episodes that have been sitting there for months. Especially when my fiancĂ© had asked me if he could delete them so many times and I had always put up a great fight.

So I watched the first one, just to see what it was like. I had seen bits and pieces of House before, but nothing ever caught my interest. I honestly thought it was boring and didn’t understand the hype. But this episode was good. This was really good. As soon as that episode finished I watched the next one. And then the last, at which point I had made up my mind that I now loved House.

Fast forward 3 weeks and I have not missed an episode since. I even watch it live instead of pre-recorded. My fiancé has gotten into watching it too (he used to claim it was crap too), and now he is always reminding me when it is on, or to not make plans on Wednesday nights.

So alas, I did miss the three important Medium episodes, but who cares now that I have House right? Now all I need to do is buy each season by the box.

My Answers

Posted by Bobbi-lee - September 18th, 2007

Here are the answers to the questions you asked me. Of course you can ask me more and I will add the answers to this post along with a plug to your website.

Meli asked: If you could only have one talent, but you could do it better than anybody else that’s ever existed, what would it be?

Hm this is a hard one. I love art so I would say anything art but that leaves it so broad. I guess if you’re the best out of everyone in the world then it wouldn’t matter because you would be the best no matter what. Then I guess I would choose illustration because it is what I love doing and to be the best would be awesome. I love this question there are so many I could choose. Wouldn’t it be great if you were the best at say something like Inventing and then you would become the worlds greatest inventor instead of Edison, Da Vinci, Einstein or Ford (and whoever else deserve to be on the list).

Clem asked: What is one (or more) band or singer than you listen to but that you wouldn’t want to admit to anyone? (I love the question because it’s so evil…)

You evil little girl. No, seriously this question doesn’t bother me. I will happily admit to some bands/singers that others (including yourself) would cringe to. I like Britney Spears I admit, I even listen to Avril Lavigne, I even like ACDC. I have a mixture of pop, rock, 80’s and rap on my iPod. The one I am probably (the slightest) embarrassed to admit is Eminem. I love Eminem but I know a lot of people don’t appreciate his music and they usually turn their noses up when I admit I love his music.

Lil asked: If you could have any superpower, what would it be and why?

I like this question. I reckon my superpower would be either invisibility because being invisible at any moment whether to hide/snoop/play around would be fun. The other power I would probably like even more would be something to do with the ocean, as I love water (I hate heights so flying superpowers are out of the question) and have always wanted to be a mermaid. So maybe a power to be able to live/breathe/talk under water.

Mari asked: When did you start designing websites?

I first started about 5 or 6 years ago. You can read my web history for more detailed info.

Did you ever have a horribly awful website that you are embarrassed to have owned?

I don’t think I have had a ‘horribly awful’ website though I have been quite embarrassed by my old websites. Mainly because I once suffered from weborexia and my sidebars were around 3cms (just over 1 inch) in width. But even then I still used my own images and/or artwork, I never used celebrity images apart from the occasional Delta Goodrem layout-with pictures I took myself. Back when I first started making websites I had one for paint tutorials and the layout was full of iframes. The site was only viewable on IE with a res. of 800×600 with bright cyan backgrounds in the iframes. Yuck!

Malin asked: What’s your number one wish right now? :)

Right now? At this very moment I am writing these answers at work to my own email so I can post them later. At work it’s boring right now so I wish something fun would happen. But in general, my wish would is that I will one day be able to afford a house of my own and to never have to rent again. I can’t wait to own a home and paint murals on the bedroom walls, and to settle down and have a family.

Lily asked: If you were a rubber duck, what would your name be?

This has to be the most different question I have been asked so far. When I was little I had a yellow rubber duck that wore pink lipstick and had a pink heart on its back. I think her name was Ducky, but I wouldn’t call myself that, I would want to be something unique from all the other rubber ducks. I used to have 3 ducks called MooMoo (she had a cow print pattern), Daffy (spitting image of daffy duck) and Brownie (because she was brown) So as you can see I am pretty lame when it comes to naming ducks. I guess I would call myself Boo, only because its my online nickname.

Cori asked: How is freelancing for you and would you ever make it your full time job?

I don’t think I could ever make freelancing a fulltime job. There were times when I could have, but more often than not there are dry spells where there is just not enough work to live on. It wasn’t until I got my first real “graphic design” job that I met with a lot of clients who would (and many did) employ me via freelance or spread the word about my skills etc. Now that I have a fulltime job that I love (but the hours are so stressful) I have been offered a lot of website design work, which I try to fit into my weekends but I usually don’t have time. If I had all these offers last year I probably would have made it a fulltime job.
The web design work is all that really pays, as well as some graphic design service, but my illustrations never seem to be needed/wanted. I had one lady ask to hire me on commission to do 20 vector illustrations. I almost agreed to it until she told me she wanted them for $3 each, which to me is way too cheap for an illustration let alone a vector. But she still got one free one out of me as I offered to do a free one (before I knew how much she wanted to pay) so I could seal the deal. It is hard to get work even if you have all the talent in the world, you really need the contacts. It’s especially hard because of where I live and graphic design is very remote.

Jumping on the bandwagon

Posted by Bobbi-lee - September 16th, 2007

When Amanda first asked us to ask her questions I wanted to make a post asking my readers to ask me some of their own questions. Because my internet was disconnected and my work computer blocks my site I couldn’t make a post which really annoyed me.

Now that I finally got around to my dad’s to make a post about it I see that almost everyone on my blog reader list has done the same. So I guess I am now jumping on the bandwagon, so to speak, and being a copycat by asking telling you to ask me a question, or three.

So ask anything you want, I do not care how serious, funny or stupid the question is, I will answer all honestly. I probably wont be online for a few days but when I do come back I will (hopefully) have enough questions to post in my next blog.

PS. I have added a new article in the visitor section and I have a few more on the way.
